NileTESOL Call for Nominations (January 2021 Online Elections)

The NileTESOL Board of Directors announces a call for nominations for three vacant seats on the Board of Directors of NileTESOL which will be virtually voted on by the members. The date and details of the voting process will be announced through the NileTESOL official communication channels (NileTESOL Website, Facebook and Twitter) prior to the NileTESOL annual Conference.  

The three vacant seats are:

1. President-Elect

2. Al-Azhar Schools & University Representative

3. Member-at-Large

All current members of NileTESOL may nominate another member as a candidate or a member may self-nominate for any of the three seats for which they are qualified. Nominees must reside in Egypt during the time of their anticipated service.

Procedures for Nomination of Candidates for President-Elect, Al-Azhar Schools or University Representative, and Member-at-Large Representative:

QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITIONS OPEN

ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF NileTESOL (January 2021)

1.PRESIDENT-ELECT

The qualifications for the seat of President-Elect are the same as those for President (see immediately below). It is understood that the President-Elect will serve one year on the Board (2021) before becoming President in 2022, which would fulfill the qualification specified under A.3.a. of the qualifications for President.

A. QUALIFICATIONS FOR PRESIDENT/PRESIDENT-ELECT

1. Should be an active member of NileTESOL for at least two years prior to nomination OR have significant experience with a similar association;

2. Should have previously demonstrated commitment to professional development, active engagement in the field of English language teaching, and to the NileTESOL mission;

3. Should provide evidence of prior effective service in one of the following capacities:

(a) as a member of the NileTESOL Board of Directors, or

(b) as chair, coordinator, or active member of a major NileTESOL committee or SIG, or

(c) head of a professional association, institutional department, division or other similar association or institution;

4. Should display a high level of proficiency in written English and should be an accomplished public speaker in English, commensurate with the duties of representing English teachers of Egypt;

5. Should have achieved professional stature in the field of ELT commensurate with the role of representing English teachers in Egypt;

6. Should be available to attend monthly weekday meetings of the Board of Directors in Cairo.

B. DUTIES OF THE PRESIDENT-ELECT

1. Attend all monthly meetings of the Board of Directors in Cairo and/or online;

2. Be available for consultation with the President on all matters concerning the association and before the Board of Directors;

3. Stand in for the President if s/he is unavailable to preside over Board meetings or other NileTESOL official functions; and

4. Represent the Board on the annual conference Organizing Committee.

2. AL-AZHAR SCHOOLS & UNIVERSITY REPRESENTATIVE

A. QUALIFICATIONS FOR AL-AZHAR SCHOOLS OR UNIVERSITY REPRESENTATIVE

1. Should be a current member of the NileTESOL, preferably for at least one year prior to running as a candidate for this office;

2. Should be familiar with and have a demonstrated commitment to the mission of NileTESOL;

3. Should be currently employed as a teacher of English at Al-Azhar Schools or Al-Azhar University;

4. Should possess broad knowledge of the English language teaching situation in Al-Azhar Schools and/or Al-Azhar University;

5. Should be able to liaise with diverse sectors of the ELT community and with teachers of English in Al-Azhar Schools and Al-Azhar University in particular;

6. Should have good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to represent the views of English teachers in Al-Azhar Schools and/or Al-Azhar University to the Board;

7. Should have a high level of proficiency in English;

8. Having native or a high-level proficiency in Arabic would be an asset; and

9. Should be available to attend weekday monthly meetings of the Board of Directors held in Cairo.

B. DUTIES OF AL-AZHAR SCHOOLS OR UNIVERSITY REPRESENTATIVE

1. Be available for a three-year commitment 2/2021-1/2023 (resignations due to relocation or other unavailability are of course possible);

2. Attend all monthly meetings of the Board of Directors in Cairo and /or online and contribute input during deliberations of the Board of Directors; and

3. Additional specific duties of the Al-Azhar Schools or University Representative on the Board will be determined by the incoming president according to the background of the elected Al-Azhar Schools or University Representative and the needs of the Board and committees of NileTESOL during the time period when the Al-Azhar Schools or University Representative serves.

3. MEMBER-at-LARGE (represents the interests of the general membership rather than a specific constituency)

A. QUALIFICATIONS for Member-at-Large

1. Should be a current active member of the NileTESOL, preferably for at least one year prior to running as a candidate for this office;

2. Should be familiar with and have a demonstrated commitment to the mission of NileTESOL;

3. Should be currently employed as a teacher of English or in an institution using English as a medium of instruction, or in a position closely related to the teaching of English in Egypt;

4. Should possess broad knowledge of the English language teaching situation in Egypt, either nationally or within a specific sector;

5. Should be able to liaise with diverse sectors of the Egyptian ELT community;

6. Should have good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to represent the view of the general membership to the Board;

7. Should have a high level of proficiency in English;

8. Having native or a high-level proficiency in Arabic would be an asset; and

9. Should be available to attend weekday monthly meetings of the Board of Directors held in Cairo.

B. DUTIES OF A MEMBER-at-LARGE
